Mine Fires
|
Mine fires are an on-going hot button environmental topic in the history of deep mining. These fires are a common enough problem in the bituminous and anthracite coal mining regions and present a multitude of environmental and safety concerns. Mine fires, with a nearly limitless supply of fuel, can burn for decades without active third party intervention. Howard’s innovative drilling and grouting techniques have been used on numerous occasions to fight these difficult-to-extinguish fires. In some cases, we have used both cementitious grouts and fire-fighting foam to quench these fires.
Additionally, we developed a patented grout nozzle for the remote installation of mine seals from the surface. Remote mine seals prevent air from contributing to the spread of the fire, or can act as dams to quench actively burning underground areas. |
